The Road of the 1000 Kasbahs and the Nomads of the Desert

Duration 2 weeks (15 days)

Arrival at the airport – we bring you to an eco-lodge off site Marrakech to make your start of the journey as smooth and comfortable as possible. Enjoy the farm with field crops and a swimming-pool near to Ourika valley.

After a relaxing breakfast we head to the High Atlas crossing the Tich’n Tizka but then taking the small road to Telouet. It was a former domicile of the Glaoui Royal family with an old Kasbah to visit.
We will stay over-night in an authentic Auberge of the mountain habitants and experience their cultural music and dances. Our mountain guide lead us through the mountains on a half-day hike.

Next morning we go on travelling to Ait Benhaddou, another former Glaoui Kasbah. For sure we will enter the old Kasbah, even it’s nowadays a touristic spot. After lunch we pass Ouarzazate and a lake with quiet places for meditation or just enjoying the nature. Over-night stay in Skoura and it’s palmerai.

Entering the rose valley our new day starts. We are following the road until Boutaghrar and then our path turns to an off-road piste. High up in the mountain we visit a group of native Berber living up there in caves like in other times. Hospitality is a major sign of respect and therefore we are invited for a glass of tea and an interchange of traditions.
Later we drive on through the valley of the river Dades, a wonderful play of nature with amazing stone formations, where a short hike along the river with picnic is on program. Over-night stay in Dades Valley.

MSEMRIR – Agoudal – Todra Gorge

Following the road until the end of Dades Valley with its miraculous views we pass Mesemrir, already off-raod, to Agoudal up in the High Atlas. We will find stalactite caves, sources of purest water and friendly habitants, the Berber where we stop for a bite to eat.  Later heading further to the Todra Gorge we enjoy the wonderful landscape  having dinner between the cliffs. Over-night stay in the gorge.

Tinerhir – Erfoud – Merzouga – Erg Chebbi

Following the road to the South we arrive in the afternoon – after having a picnic somewhere – in the dunes of Merzouga, Erg Chebbi. Here we have time to relax and enjoy the calm of the desert. A two days hike with dromedaries through the dunes with staying in a camp and visiting the Berber nomads living in the stone desert hamada.

Tafraoute Hamada – M’hamid

These two days we spend  off-road on the piste. Passing through the hamada we reach for our first over-night stay Tafraoute, a small village laying on top of a small hill in the rocket desert. Our next day we pass Erg Chegaga reaching M’hamid in the afternoon. The dunes of Erg Chegaga are known for its vastness, the dunes of Erg Chebbi for their beauty!  In M’hamid village  we can relax, enjoy a pool and spend our night.

Drâa Valley – Timiderte – Agdz

The way back to Marrakech leads us through the valley of Drâa, a river lined by large palm oasis where the Berber habitants grow their fields with dates and other field crops to live an independent life. We can visit their farms and small villages and take part at their daily life.  The old Kasbahs of the palmeraie are renewed with craftsmen of the region and we can participate in this craftwork.
Two over-night stays in genuine Kasbahs.

Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Today we head back to Marrakech crossing again the High Atlas. The last days we spend in Marrakech,  the vibrant, oriental city.  Sightseeing of the Koutoubia mosque, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle Gardens are on program. Highlight is the Medina with its colorful daily life and the market place „Djema el Fna” where bargainers, storytellers, water-sellers and snake-charmers get together. Three over-night stays in an authentic, charming Riad in the Medina.
